The threat of dangerous, perhaps deadly storms will linger overnight in parts of the Midwest and South. Huge thunderstorms, some with long-track tornadoes, violent straight-line winds and large hail to baseball size continue ahead of a cold front knifing eastward from the Mississippi Valley across the southern Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valley. The area at greatest risk for damage encompasses much of Illinois, the southeast Missouri, most of Arkansas, western Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and western Ohio. Storms producing wind damage could also sweep eastward through the mid-South and Deep South overnight.
In addition to bearing the threat of tornadoes, the storms will also unleash locally heavy rain along and east of the mid-Mississippi River Valley and along and south of the Ohio River Valley through tonight. Two-to-three-inch downpours could occur in one or two hours in some spots and local totals could reach five inches by Memorial Day.
Got two calls from Kevin yesterday. In the first, he let us know, in case we had heard it on the radio or whatever, his area was on a tornado alert and that there had been several touch down around the area, but they were safe. He called back about an hour later saying the torndo alert had been canceled, and all was still well.
Ironically, the same day, we had a 5.3 earthquake at 3AM, and Berta and I slept through it. Whatever disadvantages there are to living in AK, we do not have the severe weather of the “lower 48.”
Keep Kev and Em in your thoughts and prayers, as there are more storms predicted for today. I gather the midwest, including Indiana, was also hammered pretty hard yesterday.
